Workforce Affordable Housing for Westford
Answering the pressing need for affordable housing in Westford, Massachusetts, the non-profit The Drew Farmhouse, Inc was founded in 2023 to convert the 1865 Drew Farmhouse at 70 Boston Road into five “workforce affordable” apartments while preserving the historic exterior of this town landmark.
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Lowell soon signed on to convert the barn into two three-bedroom homes where Habitat-eligible families will be chosen to live.
While five apartments and two homes might be a small step, it is a significant one, providing an example of how workforce affordable housing can work in Westford.
A Private/Public Community Commitment
The Drew Farmhouse Inc. is extremely grateful for the support we have received throughout the town. Every step of the way, we have been met with enthusiasm from Westford officials and townspeople, culminating with the Town Meeting vote in October 2023 to allocate $1.45 million of Community Preservation money to help fund the renovation.
The Drew Farmhouse Renovation
Renovation began in early 2024 and we are on track for our first tenants to move into the farmhouse by December 2024. The Chelmsford Housing Authority has closed out applications for tenancy for the five apartments (4 one-bedroom and 1 two-bedroom). The first lottery was held at the J. V. Fletcher Library in Westford Center on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.

“We relish the opportunity to be a part of such an innovative development; one created by local entities and individuals for the betterment of the local community.”
